Day 12 - 12/02/2012

Jess and I performed the Warrior Dash this week these were the results:

Me before the race

Jess before the race

Me after the race

My face after the race

The gang after the race. Fun times.
It was a great laugh and I thoroughly recommend it to anyone who likes having fun and getting a little messy.

Day 8 - 08/02/2012

Well just done the measurements for my first week without drinking, and I have to be honest I had a fat day yesterday and am pretty bloated from all the sushi I had for dinner so I am not impressed but here they are.

So as you can see, not a vast improvement but after a belly full of white rice sushi it could have been worse, I'm most pleased about the weight off the belly and the pictures which show some improvement. That said, its another 3 weeks to go and I need to keep strong and keep going. Hopefully I'll look fucking awesome afterwards.

Day Six - 06/02/2012

First day back to work after my first weekend without alcohol in a long time.

To be honest my weekend was pretty mundane without drinking. Friday night the girlfriend went out drinking with mates and I stayed in to my own devices.

Saturday we actually went to a cookery class in the day which was pretty cool. It was also pretty easy to resist the complementary champagne. The evening was another night in, which although not bad just wasn't the same as going out and seeing friends.

Sunday we went to the beach because it was a gorgeous day, and being in the sun and the sea calmed me down a bit as I was starting to feel like a caged animal. Then we came home and did a little cooking before getting an early night.

This whole no drinking thing can be likened to being told you can't run any more. Its not the end of the world, but it takes away a little something of yourself that was fun and replaces it with nothing. That's not to say that you can't find other things to do, I have a lovely herbal tea collection now...

Still 22 more days to go, oh and a weigh in on Wednesday to look forward to. I think I've lost a KG but who knows it seems to depend on what I ate or drank that day, but still the measurements should be interesting.

Day Four - 04/02/2012

Today I learnt that two slices of Cafe Style Raisin Toast takes up 600 calories.

Day Two - 02/02/2012

Today was all right but to be honest I am looking at my whiskey decanter this evening with longing eyes. This isn't going to be easy.

That said, I did download a pretty cool app for my phone today called MyFitnessPal which seems like its going to be pretty useful.

Not only does it come with a pretty cool widget (see the new weight loss thing on the right side of the page), but it has given me a target calorie number to hit if I want to lose weight, which seems like a cool idea now that I'm off the grog.

All you have to do, is set your current weight, age, sex and target weight loss (1.5lbs a week just so you know) and it tells you how many calories you are allowed a day (1660 for me). Then over the course of the day you get to add what food you have eaten all day. It really has everything, even particular brand foods so the calories and different weights and sizes so they are very accurate on the calorie counter.

With that in mind I thought I'd show you what I've eaten and how many calories I've eaten all day. What I have found, as you will see, is that I don't really eat that much and don't even hit the calorie target for a controlled weight loss. In fact, what I could see is that when I added what I usually drank in a night, that is where I would jump to or above the calorie target.

Fatty fatty alcohol

So here is what I ate today

Breakfast
Large Bowl of Just Right Cereal with Semi Skimmed milk - 232
Instant Coffee with Semi Skimmed milk - 31

Lunch
Protein Shake - 120

Dinner
Honey Chicken (1 cup) - 500
Garden Salad - 40
Egg - 85

Snacks
Carrot Sticks - 30
High Protein Bar - 180
Instant Coffee with Semi Skimmed milk - 31
Instant Coffee with Semi Skimmed milk - 31

TOTAL = 1280

Which as you can see is a lot less than the Goal calorie of 1660, and wait it gets even worse when you consider I went to the gym today and did 40 minutes of high intensity circuit training which burns off [according to the MyFitnessPal] around 271 calories.

This leaves me with a net calorie burn of 1009 which means that by the time this month is over I am going to be one skinny motherfucker!!!

01 February 2012

Day One - 01/02/2012

I guess if this blog is going to work the way I think it should work then I need to set guidelines.

What am I trying to prove? Well that I can stop drinking whenever I want, and I will look and feel all the better for it after a month without any booze.

In order to prove this I will take one fairly weary and unsure 28yr old lad nursing a slight hangover the evening after a night of two bottles of red wine and a bottle of beer, AKA me, and ensure that zero units of alcohol pass through my lips for the entirety of the experiment.

I will do this over the month of February which is 4 weeks, or because its a bloody leap year 29 days.

During that time I will measure the following parts of my anatomy and keep a picture diary so that I can log my progress and check back to see how fucking chubby I looked on 1st Feb 2012:

  • Weight: 83kg
  • Waist: 95.5cm
  • Arse: 94cm
  • Chest: 105cm
  • Thigh: 58cm
  • Body Picture (Profile):
I don't think I look in too bad shape, but that belly does look like its seen some action in its
  • Body Picture (Side):
Yeah I know, impressive cock shot but seriously that belly still pushes out further. For shame.
  • Attitude of Subject (me):  Apprehensive, but keen to get started this over with.
Lets get the water party started!!!

The Beginning

Hi,

Today I am going to start something that I am not sure will be possible. I am going to try to stop drinking alcohol for the month of February.

Writing it down actually makes it sound a little daft, some people give up alcohol completely, so surely I can do it for four weeks and they have a much stronger dependency on it than I do. However, I also know that is isn't going to be easy, which is why I have decided to start a blog. I'm not going to let anyone know about it. Its more for myself than anything and its going to be there purely to give me somewhere when I want to write down how much I'd like a drink or how good I am feeling. A booze free diary as it were.

"But Michael, why even bother giving up alcohol for a month?" I hear you ask. Well other than the fact that I might lose some belly weight, its simple. My dad drinks to excess and always has, and I've come to accept that its probably the thing that will kill him eventually. I'm 28 now and don't want to make the same mistakes as my dad. Or at the very least show to myself that I am not dependent on alcohol, and that it is, just like many of my previous habits, something I have just let get a excessive as of late.

To be honest, that's one of my biggest problems I find it difficult to take things slowly; I rush my food when I eat, when I smoked I smoked 25 a day, and when I did cocaine I did it almost every night. I even drink water by gulping down a pint. I never sip anything. Its not like I'm in a rush either, its just a habit I have and can't seem to break it. The fact that I'm quitting drinking for a month, rather than learning to pace myself, isn't lost on my either.

Why can't I have some self control!?!

Sod it, its a start.
